A Report On The Internship At The UNHQ Chinese Verbatim Reporting Service

The author interned in the Chinese Verbatim Reporting Service of the United Nations from 8 July to 8 September 2019,responsible for translating the verbatim reports of the United Nations,General Assembly,Disarmament Commission,and Security Council from English to Chinese.A verbatim report is a record of the speeches made at the meeting.The source text is the written version of the speech,not an edited summary,resolution,or treaty.It can be said that the translation of verbatim reports is a way of work between interpretation and translation.Therefore,in this daily practice of interpreting through translation,the author probes into the features of verbatim reports of the United Nations and ways to translate these reports,especially how to strike a balance between translation and interpretation.The author finds out that the skills of syntactic linearity in sight interpreting can be used for reference in the Verbatim Reporting Service,making the translation more readable.The report is in four parts.The first part gives an overview of the internship,which introduces the background,contents,and objectives of the program.The second part is the design and planning of the internship,including the design,schedule,and emergency precautions of the project.The third part is the case study,which analyzes the use of segmentation,conversion,and addition in the Verbatim Reporting Service from the perspective of syntactic linearity.The expected results of the internship are in the final part.It reviews the whole report and describes the benefits of this internship to the author’s study of interpreting.
