Analysis Of Similarities And Differences On Interpretating Long Sentences By Sight Interpretation And Vabatim

Long sentences are always the most difficult part in both translation and interpretation. This paper is based on the author’s internship experience in UN’s NY Headquarter from July2011to Sep2011. During the internship, the author learned through practicing how to work as a verbatim in UN. During the practice, she found out that long sentences are frequently applied in speeches of meetings of UN’s Security Council. At beginning of the internship, the author tried to apply the skills of sight interpretation when doing verbatim translation for long sentences. However, some of the skills resulted in proper and efficient translation while some made the structure of translated sentences too "loose" to read.Thus, the author did both sight interpretation and verbatim, and analysis the differences between both versions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what kinds of sight interpretation skills might be properly used to do verbatim and how could verbatim practice help to improve the quality of sight interpretation.
