A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Conclave Conspiracy(Excerpts)

This paper is based on the functional equivalence theory of American translation theorist Eugene Nida.Based on the Chinese translation of the excerpt from the novel Conclave Conspiracy,this paper reviews the chapters translated by the author,aiming to analyze the application of functional equivalence theory in novel translation.Fiction translation belongs to literary translation,whose purpose is to require the translator to reproduce the artistic style of the original text with appropriate target language on the basis of a profound understanding of the connotation of the original work,and to make the readers have a similar reading experience with the original text,thus forming a complete artistic style,so as to realize the readability of the text.This purpose is consistent with the application of functional equivalence theory in translation.Novel translation should also be measured by readers’ responses,and try to use the most natural and appropriate language to translate the original text.Therefore,the functional equivalence theory proposed by Nida is feasible as the basic principle of the translation of the novel Conclave Conspiracy.Conclave Conspiracy is a novel written by American writer Burnham Philbrook between2009 and 2014.The novel mainly tells a series of stories about the American lawyer James after he was elected Pope of Rome.The language is vivid and interesting.There is no Chinese translation published at present.The author selects this novel as the research sample,analyzes it on the basis of functional equivalence theory,discusses the guiding significance of this theory in the novel,and summarizes the shortcomings of this translation practice and some experiences gained from it,in order to provide translation experience for dealing with the translation practice of literary works of the same type.
