In modern society, with the rapid development of Internet technology, the communication between China and the rest of the world are getting closer and closer.People of all countries can deepen the connection and promote mutual understanding through social networks and emerging media at any time.Against this backdrop, there is still a traditional way to promote cultural exchange among countries, that is literature. And the novel is one of the essential forms, which makes the translation of novel especially important.Under the circumstances, this thesis will be based on the translation practice of The Burning Girl written by Claire Messud.Claire Messud is an American novelist, and she is also a professor of literary and creative writing. The Burning Girl is Claire Messud’s seventh novel. The book mainly describes a coming-of-age story of two girls and the struggles faced in adolescence.Guided by Nida’s theory of functional equivalence, the present translation practice report explores the application of functional equivalence in novel translation according to the translator’s practice in the translation of The Burning Girl.Novel translation belongs to literary translation, which aims at transmitting information and reproducing the original text style, and this is corresponding to the functional equivalence theory that emphasizes the reader’s feelings. The novel is rich in language, compact and coherent, highlighting the delicate plot description and vivid portrayal of characters. Therefore,it is important for the translator to convey the content of the original text and be reproduced the feelings and emotions expressed by the author so that the functional equivalence can be achieved in novel translation. This translation practice report applies specific translation theory and skills to translation practice, and the translator analyzed some particular examples from lexical and syntactic aspects. The translator summarized the experiences and lessons in the course of translation.By translating this book, the translator hopes to improve her translation ability, and hopes this report will be used for other translators.
