As the building of an innovative country accelerates, the importance of science communication will inevitably become increasingly prominent, and the research work on science communication will also increase progressively. The material of this translation report is an excerpt from Science Communication in South Africa published by African Minds. The source text gives a detailed explanation of the status quo of science communication in South Africa and the issues of science communication in various scientific fields. This publication provides a good material and reference for us to understand and research on issues related to science communication, and a complete Chinese translation version is not yet available. The source text selected in this report is an information-based text, covering the fields of science, communication, society, economy, etc. With a focus on content,it contains many professional terms, strong logic and complex sentence structures. Therefore, this author takes the Text type theory as the guidance to carry out the translation practice.Under the guidance of the theory, the informative text should be translated with the target language as the orientation, the translation should conform to the reading habits of the target language readers, and the content of the original text should be conveyed concisely and accurately.Different translation methods such as literal translation, free translation, explication, restructuring, inversion, and active-passive conversion have been adopted in the translation practice.Through this translation practice, the author draws the following conclusion: First of all, text type theory helps translators analyze the text types and language characteristics of the source texts, and then determine suitable translation strategies in order to improve the translation quality, thus,it has a strong guiding role in translation practice.Secondly, the source text involves science, communication, and other fields, and it is highly professional. In order to ensure the accuracy of the translation,it is essential to learn background knowledge and consult parallel texts. Finally, for long sentences and complex sentence patterns that often appear in information-based texts, splitting, restructuring, and inversion during translation are effective ways to ensure the smoothness and logical clarity of the translation.
