This report is based on two academic articles, that contain about 16,000 words, which were translated from English into Chinese. The first article was written by Farhan Faisal and published in the September 2016 issue of Journal of Undergraduate Research(pages 1-5)named An Analysis of Electric Vehicle Trends in Developed Nations: A Sustainable Solution for India; The second was written by Marcello Contestabile and published in the 2017 issue of Energy Policy(pages 20-30)entitled Will Current Electric Vehicle Policy Lead to Cost-effective Electrification of Passenger Car Transport? These two papers discussed the current situation of global electric vehicle development, technical research and national development policies, which leaves a far-reaching impact on energy saving and emission reduction. The Chinese version of these two articles has a certain translation value for it contributes to the research, development and promotion of pure electric vehicles in China, which helps to solve the problems such as energy shortage as well as environmental pollution and form a green development and life style. On the other hand, the Chinese translation is helpful for businessmen in China’s automobile industry to respond to the call for investment in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and open up foreign electric vehicle markets. As a scientific and technological text, lexically,it contains a large number of technical terms, such as compound words, professional words and acronyms.Syntactically, complex sentences and passive voice are frequently used to ensure the objectivity and authenticity.Textually, the original text contains a large number of charts and formulas,as well as words that express logical relations.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the translator adheres to the three principles of accuracy, fluency and conciseness, hoping to maximize the objectivity, logicality and accuracy of the source text.Lexically, methods such as adding footnotes,transliteration,part-of-speech conversion and retranslation are adopted;Syntactically, techniques such as passive to active, semantic addition and sentence pattern adjustment are used to ensure the coherence and readability of sentence patterns.Textually, the text is translated mainly according to the consistency of the information in the original text in order to reproduce its authentic style and features. This report consists of five parts: the first part introduces the translation project, including the background, significance and translation requirements;the second part introduces the process of translation studies, including pre-translation preparation, translation plan formulation, translation process description and post-translation correction;the third part is the theoretical basis of translation, including an overview of functional equivalence theory and its application in scientific and technological texts. The fourth part is the case study.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, the translator analyzes the cases from three aspects of lexical, sentence and textual equivalence. The fifth part is the summary of this translation practice project, combined with author’s own practical translation experience,in which she summarizes the experience of the translation process together with the existing problems and possible inaccuracies in translation. In a word, the author’s translation accurately conveys the information of the source text and reproduces the objectivity and logicality of the source text, and could be accepted by the target language readers. However, due to the limitations of scientific and technological knowledge, the translator’s understanding of the integrity of the source text is limited to a certain extent. Therefore, some inaccuracies in the translation work are still inevitable due to the reasons mentioned above, which leaves some room for improvement in its quality. |
