The Lost and Found Bookshop is a novel written by one of New York Times best-selling authors Susan Wiggs.It is already flooding and popular among readers in western countries and acclaimed by many professional counterparts.The novel focuses on Natalie Harper’s life and renders a gentle love story with language filled with delicacy and literariness so the difficult points of this translation practice lie in how to conform to cultural background,the expression rules and the characteristics of the literary text in target language.Moreover,this book is rendered appropriately into Chinese in an effort to help Chinese readers to know more about foreign cultures and customs and provide references and thoughts to Chinese modern novelist as well.This report,on the basis of the E-C translation of The Lost and Found Bookshop(excerpt),focuses on the analysis of the specific cases in this novel from the four angles of Adaptation Theory—contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes.Firstly,in order to achieve contextual adaptation in the target language,liberal translation,idiomatic translation and literal translation plus annotation are utilized to achieve the communicative needs.Secondly,in an effort to realize structural adaptation,shift is well applied due to the structural differences between English and Chinese.Thirdly,addition is used for complementing the cultural background knowledge involved in the original text in dynamic adaptation between different culture systems.Fourthly,to make translation choices that conform to the purpose of adaptation with high consciousness,four-word idioms and rhetorical devices are specially used to take the advantage of the target text so as to better adapt to literary features of this novel in target language and the needs of the target readers on the one hand and to provide a more idiomatic version on the other.Finally,this report illustrates that Adaptation Theory can offer some guidance for E-C translation practice of novels and attempts to provide some practical and helpful suggestions and references for studies on E-C translation of this type of text.
