A Practice Report On E-C Lecture Interpreting In The Light Of Reception Rhetoric-based On The Interpreting Practice Of The Lecture “Science In Sports”

With the acceleration of the globalization process,there has been more and more international exchange,and interpreting activities have become an irreplaceable part of these exchanges.Among these interpreting activities,liaison interpreting is most widely used in various aspects,including political,business,technological,financial and legal affairs.In liaison interpreting,the interpreters are required to be as accurate as possible,or the results would be disastrous.Another feature of liaison interpreting is that the interpreter always keeps company of the speakers to facilitate the communication between both parties,because the possible gap in information and respective roles between the two parties will probably exert great pressure on the interpreter.The report is based on the author’s interpreting practice for the public science lecture sponsored by the Provincial Science Museum of Fujian.The lecture was themed on “Science in Sports”.The lecturer,David Price,is a famous street performer in science communication from the UK.As the speaker used short sentences in his speech to communicate with the audience because the content is not so familiar to the audience,the report focuses on analysis from the features of liaison interpreting.This report analyses the strategies utilized in the specific interpreting practice in the light of features of liaison interpreting and properties of reception rhetoric,on the basis of which the author is able to reflect upon a liaison interpreting process.The author holds that the interpreter can enhance comprehension by addition when the expression used by the speaker are beyond the audience’s understanding capacity;and he/she may also respond to the audience’s cultural preference by omission.Furthermore,the strategy of replacement can be used to convey the speaker’s message more fluently or clearly.By analysis and reflection on the author’s performance in the light of reception rhetoric the author hopes that this report can provide references not only for herself,but also for other interpreters in similar scenario.
