A Practice Report On Liaison Interpreting For The 18th Wuzhou Jewel Festival

With the development of friendly relations between China and ASEAN countries,the two sides have been witnessing the intensified exchanges.The 18 th Wuzhou Jewel Festival was held in Wuzhou City from December 3 to 5,2021.This report is based on the author’s work as a liaison-escort interpreter during this event.This report consists of four chapters.The report first introduces the interpreting task and then describes the implementation process of the task,including the preparation,the interpreting process description,and the feedback received.The third chapter is the most crucial part: the case analysis.This chapter summarizes and analyzes the difficulties encountered in interpreting from the linguistic and non-linguistic aspects,including the lack of logic in the source language,the interpreter’s unfamiliarity with the terminology,the psychological stress,and the multiple identities of the interpreter.In addition,the chapter lists three main interpreting strategies used in this interpreting practice,including conversion,generalization,and omission.Through the research and analysis,the author has deeply recognized that liaison interpreters should give full play to the interpreter’s subjectivity and actively adopt interpreting strategies to achieve communicative purposes.The author has also made clearer her own shortcomings and how to improve herself.This report hopes to provide references for the interpreting community and help other interpreters perform more appropriately in similar interpreting tasks.
