| This translation report,based on the biography Discovering of the Jews Series— Reaching the Nobel Prize,mainly introduces the life experiences of 19 Jewish Nobel Prize winners,exploring their glorious,struggled or industrious lives.Recently,its translation version has been published by Tsinghua University Press.The author of this report takes three aspects of Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory — cultural equivalence,translator’s active stance and cultural untranslatability as a base,supplemented by the authenticity and literariness of biography translation,and offers translation rules and methods to the translation problems at linguistic and cultural level.For the lexical translation at linguistic level,transliteration,transliteration plus literal translation and adopting established popular translation are utilized to ensure the accuracy and profession of the target translation for the feature of authenticity.By enhancing translator’s active stance,Chinese four-character structure can be used in descriptive language to increase the aesthetics and readability of target language for the feature of literariness.For the syntactic translation at linguistic level,considering the cultural translation purpose —promoting cultural exchange between two cultures,flexible translation methods like linearity,reverse,division and synthesis are chosen to make the translation conform to the language features of Chinese,which can link readers and translation texts more closely.For the cultural default at cultural level,according to the features of cultural untranslatibility,cultural factors should be considered and the translation methods like transliteration,transliteration plus annotation,literal and liberal translation plus annotation are utilized to fully convey the cultural information of the source language and bridge the cultural gap.By discussing the applicability and the guiding role of Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory to biography translation,the author hopes to provide Chinese readers with a general understanding of Jewish culture to promote cultural exchange between two nations.It is of equal importance that this report can offer certain reference for future biography translation. |
