| Amélie Nothomb is a famous Belgian writer and one of the most popular best-selling authors in the French literature. Most of her novels are short in length which are contain death themes. It is necessary and meaningful to interpret the death in best-selling writers’ works. Therefore, this thesis mainly tries to analyze the death writing in Nothomb’s novels. After mainly expounding Nothomb’s growth experience in many countries,as well as the current status of domestic and foreign research on her works,I focus on the three types of death written by Nothomb in her novels.Different types of death have their own causes and presentations. The characters in the novel choose to commit suicide in order to seek self-liberation.Murdering others embodies the selfishness and indifference of human nature, while mental death represents an unusual state of life.Through careful reading of the text,I find that Nothomb adopts a unique and weird way when writing death, presenting a violent aesthetic style.Nothomb also arranges the deaths in the novel at different positions, and uses careful layout to make them play their respective roles.Nothomb keeps death within the reader’s sight through the direct and clear writing language of death,so that readers feel the uniqueness of her writing death, while spontaneously and deeply think about death, and explore the spiritual meaning, that is,death is the possibility of seeking self-salvation,the consequence of the individual being in mental loneliness for a long time, and it inspires readers to correctly understand the complexity of the world. |
