E.M. Forster was a famous British writer who living in the half of20th century. He had a keen awareness of death because of the great changes of social history and personal experience. Firstly, the civilization and development of industrial machinery destroyed people’s peaceful life. Two world wars not only destructed the sanctity of life, but also showed the dark of death. In addition to that, as his friends and family passed away, Foster became very anxiety. As a result, the era change and personal experience was projected in Forster’s writings, forming his unique art of writing death.There were a variety of the portraits of people who had different manners of death in Foster’s works. The first figure was characterized by ts sudden death, they had the great courage to challenge the hypocrisy of middle-class lifestyle. But they sudden death because they couldn’t overcome selfishness and possessiveness; The second figure showed the boredom of the British middle class. They had a strict middle-class life when they live. After death, they went into the empty and cold world forever; The third characters had the enrich spiritual and harmonious tranquility. They were angels who guarding the ancient moral heritage of England. However, they had the crisis of spiritual and died because of the industrial development, colonial expansion; Mrs. Moore is the representative of the fourth characters. She wanted to link English and Indians with love, tolerance and beautiful desire. But she fell into a serious spiritual crisis with the influence of mysterious Indian sky, caves, religion and the Christian faith. In the end, she died in the Indian Ocean.Not only did Foster shape the different character portraits, but also used a unique artistic way to write death. In Forster’s works, there were many death imageries like night and water; The death narrative mechanism was formed with recite, omit, spiritual cultural space and so on; What’s more, the cold and indifferent language became his unique style of presentation, demonstrating his contempt for physical death and expect for spiritual continuation of life.In the end, we can tell the view of Foster’s death from these unique portraits of people and the art way of writing death. Firstly, He believes that the death was sudden and significant challenges and accidents. Death means the body’s destruction and loss of life. But it does not mean everything is destroyed; Secondly, facing death, humans should be weep sincerely and think about the meaning of death at the same time, realize the value of life, to achieve the sublimation of self-spiritual.
