| The material for this simulated interpretation is a lecture entitled “Marionettes and Individuals”,which is the first part of the series lectures: “Maps of Believing: The Architecture of Belief” given by Jordan Peterson at the University of Toronto in 2017.The lecture, with the animated film “Pinocchio” as the introduction,is lively and profound. It discusses the drawbacks of “Marionettes”,which is of great significance for the audience to understand the importance of individuals. This practice report mainly analyzes the redundant information in the simulated interpretation, summarizing corresponding interpreting strategies by cases study.Based on the language itself and the information it delivers, the redundant information in this lecture is divided into three categories.First, omission can be adopted to solve the language redundancy caused by discourse markers and the repetition of words and sentences, thus making the target language concise.Second, semantic compression can be adopted to solve the semantic redundancy caused by synonyms, and the redundancy of the target language can be reduced by summarizing the synonyms information and grasping the main idea of the sentence.Third, generalization can be adopted to solve the context redundancy caused by co-text and context of situation, and a brief overview of the known information can optimize the energy allocation of interpreter. The significance of this practice report lies in: The redundant information is a common problem in simultaneous interpreting.Hopefully, the interpreting strategies proposed in the report can provide some reference for other interpreters to improve the quality of simultaneous interpreting. |
