The materials for this simulated Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting project are selected from two of the ten special programs named Historical Juncture launched by Lecture Room on CCTV10 at the end of 2021.The speakers analyzed China’s development in the past hundred years from the perspective of important historical moments and different backgrounds of times. This simultaneous interpreting program is of great relevance to promote Chinese culture going out under the strategy of “Going Global” so that the whole world will know better about China. The speakers of this program were characterized by the frequent use of Chinese four-character structure, especially four-character idioms(a total of 97),which posed the biggest challenge to this simultaneous interpreting.According to the classification of the basic structure of four-character idioms in the book Modern Chinese by Huang Borong and Liao Xudong, the three structures with the highest frequency are analyzed in the material of this report:(1)the coordinate structure;(2)the subject-predicate structure;(3)the verb-object structure.Among them, there are 37 of the first category,23 of the second and 16 of the third respectively.Skopos theory, represented by German interpreter Hans·Vermeer was developed in the1970 s.The theory mainly follows three principles: skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Based on Skopos theory, the author puts forward the following interpreting strategies to solve difficulties caused by Chinese four-character idioms:(1)Using simplifying, generalizing and paraphrasing for interpreting coordinate four-character idioms;(2)Using restructuring and paraphrasing for interpreting subject-predicate four-character idioms;(3)Using borrowing, generalizing and compensating for interpreting verb-object four-character idioms. This report hopes to cast some enlightenment on further researches for the simultaneous interpreting of four-character idioms.
