| This translation report is based on the English to Chinese translation of Chapters3 and 4 of The Confucian Political Imagination. The source language text focuses on the influence of Confucianism on Western politics and culture. The source text is an academic text with a rigorous logic and complex sentence structure, and there are grammatical, semantic and logical differences between English and Chinese,so how to achieve a coherent translation to ensure the reader-friendliness of the translation and to reproduce the original author’s ideas becomes the focus of this translation practice report. This translation practice report is mainly based on Wang Dongfeng’s A Preliminary Study on Discourse Coherence and Translation and Halliday and Hasan’s Cohesion in English,as well as the relevant theories of other distinguished scholars. After analyzing the source language text with the above theories, the author explores how to achieve coherence in the translation of academic texts from three aspects:semantic coherence, grammatical coherence and logical coherence. In terms of semantic coherence, the author focuses on the realization of semantic coherence from two aspects: lexical reduplication and lexical co-occurrence;in terms of grammatical coherence, the author explores how to realize the coherence of the translation from two aspects: denotative articulation and alternative articulation;in terms of logical coherence, the author focuses on how to identify and transform the causal, transitive and conditional relations in the original text to realize the logical coherence of the translation. To address the above coherence issues, the author uses translation techniques such as conversion, reduction of reference, omission and clarification to reproduce the coherence of the translation to the greatest extent possible, taking into account the relevant cases. |
