The materials of this translation practice come from the first three chapters of Routledge Handbook of literature Translation,which was published by Routledge in 2019.This book is about literary translation and literary translation teaching,including literary translation theory and practice,and the translation of classical poetry,oral literature,and children’s literature,and so on,which provide some significant findings for the translation research and practice.As a social science text,the book is characterized by typical academic style,including objective and accurate expression,and rigorous logic.In the translating process,there are a lot of difficulties,such as the comprehension and rendering of technical terms and long sentences,as well as the writing background.But the biggest problem comes from the rendering of passive voice,due to differences in the specific expressions and the general culture between Chinese and English.Passive voice are more frequently used in English than in Chinese.Therefore,the author makes some research on the passive voice in social science texts,analyzes and summarizes the corresponding strategies,such as turning English passive voice into Chinese passive voice,turning them into Chinese active sentence,turning them into Chinese judgment sentences and Chinese sentences without subject,etc.to provide certain reference to improve the quality of translation and readers’ reading.This translation report is divided into five parts.The first chapter is the task description,mainly introducing the source of the text,the background of the task and the significance of this translation task;the second chapter describes the process of the translation practice,including the preparation before translation,the translating process and the proofreading after translation;the third chapter mainly introduces the definition and classification of English passive voice,the similarities and differences between English and Chinese passive voice,and the related research on the translation strategies in translating passive voice.The fourth chapter mainly focuses on the typical cases of passive voice by introducing four different translation strategies,including turning into Chinese passive voice,turning into Chinese active sentence,turning into Chinese judgment sentences and Chinese sentences without subject;The fifth chapter is the conclusion,which summarizes the gains and shortcomings of this translation practice. |
