An E-C Translation Report Of Killing Crazy Horse:the Merciless Indian Wars In America(Prologue And Chapters 1-3)

The report is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text of the translation report is Killing Crazy Horse: The Merciless Indian Wars in America,written by American bestselling authors Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard.Their Killing series are very popular around the world.The whole text is divided into chapters in chronological order.The translator chooses Prologue and Chapters One to Three to translate for this translation report.In this report,in order to enable readers to have an overview,firstly,it presents an introduction to the author and source text as well as significance and structure of this report.Then,the translator makes a brief introduction to the process of translating.During the translation process,the translator has encountered various difficulties,which are mainly embodied in two levels,lexical level and syntax level.At lexical level,the difficulties contain the translation of proper nouns,measurement units and part of speech,and the difficulties in syntax level include English idioms,attributive sentences,compound and long sentences as well as passive sentences.As for the difficulties mentioned above,different translation methods are adopted to tackle them severally,such as established translation and transliteration for the translation of proper nouns,cut-in notes for the translation of measurement units and conversion for the translation of parts of speech.For the difficulties at syntax level,the translator uses four-character words in Chinese to translate the English idioms,preposition and postposition for the translation of attributive sentences,linear translation and recasting for the translation of complex sentences and shift the voice to translate the passive sentences.After finishing this translation project,the translator has gained a lot.On the one hand,for the knowledge aspect,a faithful and fluent translation is impossible to make without certain translation methods and skills,and a solid bilingual foundation and adequate translation practice also are needed.On the other hand,for the translator self qualities,a good translator is supposed to be careful and assiduous which makes a good translation happen.Moreover,this experience has improved translator’s abilities in translating historical text from English to Chinese and deepened the understanding of the different expressions between English and Chinese as well.
