The source text of this translation project is selected from the third chapter of Media Environments and Mental Disorder.Chapter three analyzes thoroughly the mental disorder, autism, discusses its development, genetic causation, relevant research findings, and mentions specialists’ theories. The translation project may provide readers with an insight into autistics and a proper attitude toward autistic people, especially children with autism. This translation project is guided by Newmark’s text typology and communication translation theory. Therefore, the author of this report has analyzed the text type and features of the source text.Combining the differences between English and Chinese languages, the author of the report has summed up difficulties and corresponding solutions in the translation from lexical and syntactic levels. There are many psychological and medical terms and nominalization in the source text.So the author of the report has explained terms by explicitation and used the conversion of word classes and amplification to deal with nominalization, which makes a minor adjustment and ensures target readers can catch the maximum information of the source text.As for the syntactic level, there are many passive forms, adverbial clauses, and attributive clauses. The logic relations between components of the sentence are complicated. The author of the report then has applied conversion of voice, reversing, division and recasting to clarify and rearrange those components, ensuring the naturalness of the target text and the acceptance of the target readers.
