As an important modern art form,film does not only function as mass entertainment,but also is a powerful medium of civic education.Its visual and audio essence is naturally endowed with widespread propagation effect.Therefore,by portraying typical modern characters and discussing the underlying social context,film can effectively promote audience to realize,reflect,and even try to solve existing social problems.This essay focuses on writer’s graduation project The Truth,deciphering the character portrayal techniques in the screenplay.As a script based on social issues,The Truth considers the aesthetic psychology of Chinese audiences,uses various methods to create vivid and multidimensional characters in many specific settings,and eventually explores social issues of this era.This thesis unfolds four main techniques of creating vivid and multidimensional characters in film and television scripts: constructing complex character backgrounds,molding special relationships between characters,setting contrasting personalities,and presenting the inner world of characters.As a final touch,the essay emphasizes the core importance of vivid and multidimensional characters in script creation.
