| Celeste Ng,a contemporary Chinese-American writer, has published two novels, namely Everything I Never Told You and Little Fires Everywhere.Celeste Ng is good at using binary opposition to serve the ideological intention she wants to express.First of all,the binary opposition in Celeste Ng’s novel creation is reflected in two groups on the theme: ideal and reality, tradition and rebellion. In the opposition between ideal and reality,James and his wife,Pearl and Babe in Celeste Ng’s novels are struggling in the struggle between ideal and reality, but unfortunately, after many twists and turns, the cruel reality still overcomes their inner ideal. In the opposition between tradition and rebellion, through the rebel struggle between Marilyn and Lzzy,Celeste Ng expressed her values: whether successful or not, everyone should seek the life he wants.Secondly,Celeste Ng constructs the conflict between male and female,Asian and white, parents and children in her novels.Through the writing of Marilyn and Pauline Hawthorne,Celeste Ng’s works reflect the oppression of women by the male-dominated society in the United States in the 1950 s.Marilyn fought against the male-dominated society in the United States since high school.Pauline Hawthorne tried hard to maintain her own characteristics in the traditional society.Through the portrayal of James and Babe,it truly reflects the situation of Asian Americans in American society.James made great efforts to integrate into American society, but white people always regarded him as an alien. In the custody incident,Mrs.mccullough and Mr.Richardson unconsciously revealed discrimination against Chinese culture and Asian image. The portrayal of Lydia and Lzzy reflects the problem of parent-child relationship in the family.Lydia had been carrying the expectations of her parents and lacked self. She finally jumped into the lake and died because of too much pressure.lzzy was independent.Mrs.Richardson suppressed her behavior.Lzzy, who had been fighting all the time, finally escaped from Cleveland, which was full of power and discipline. In addition,Celeste Ng’s works have created two characters full of contradictions and duality: Marilyn and Mrs.Richardson, making the characters in the novel more vivid.Furthermore,Celeste Ng’s works use natural images to highlight the themes of destruction and rebirth, and space images to highlight the spiritual predicament of Chinese Americans and the authority of capitalism.Natural images mainly involve two groups of images: water and fire.Lydia’s diving and suicide seems to be a kind of destruction, but it is actually a kind of spiritual salvation. The small flame in Izzy’s heart helped her get out of the routine life and onto the road of seeking self-identity,while Mrs.Richardson believed that fire was destructive.Under the spiritual oppression of white space,James fled to the apartment of an Asian assistant and gained a brief sense of belonging.Mrs.Richardson’s house was full of authority, and lzzy burned it down to resist power.Celeste Ng’s works successfully foil her creative ideas and enrich her characters by using images.Celeste Ng is a new generation of Chinese-American writer. In her writing, she successfully depicts the characters using the principle of binary opposition, deepening the theme, enhancing the artistic appeal of her works, and reflecting the struggle of ethnic group, gender and parent-child relationship.Celeste Ng’s application of the principle of binary opposition enhances the artistic quality of the novel. At the same time, the application of the principle of binary opposition can deepen readers’ understanding of the novel, thus further exploring the deep connotation in Celeste Ng’s works. |
