A Practical Report On The E-C Translation Of Testing And Assessment In Translation And Interpreting Studies(Chapter Five)

The research focusing on the field of language testing in China from 1978 to the present mainly involves test reliability and validity,factors affecting test performance,test grading and rating scale,technical use in language testing,test backwash effect and classroom assessment,while translation test is an important means to evaluate foreign language ability.The source text of this translation practice is from the Fifth Chapter of Testing and Assessment in Translation and Interpreting Studies,mainly discussing the effectiveness of meaning-oriented assessment of translations,and systemic functional linguistics(SFL)and its application to formative assessment.Under the guidance of translation aesthetics,the translator not only completed this translation task,but also reflected on the entire translation process.As an academic paper,the wording of the source text is formal,elegant and rigorous.There are many terminologies relating to systemic functional linguistics and many proper names to be translated.There are also many long and difficult sentences in which passive voice is frequently used.Many tables and figures can be seen in the source text.Major difficulties lie in the translation of terminologies and some long and difficult sentences.Under the guidance of accuracy principle,the translator accurately understood the meaning of the source text,and then faithfully translated every word.Under the guidance of fashion principle,the translator realized that the language of the target text should be in line with today’s aesthetic standards.Under the guidance of adaptability principle,the translator unified the literary style and formal level of speech between the source text and the target text.Under the guidance of professionalism principle,the translator strictly translated the terminologies,names,figures and tables,and paid special attention to the format of academic papers as well as the consistency of terminologies.Besides,various translation techniques,such as explanation,transliteration,transplant,inserting,etc.have been used to accurately translate English words into Chinese ones;many translation techniques such as embedding,reversing,splitting-off,recasting,etc.have been applied to make sure that the long and difficult sentences are well understood by the target audience.This report aims at exploring the application of translation aesthetics in informative texts,and inspiring those working in the field of translation testing research.
