A Report On The E-C Translation Of Testing And Assessment In Translation And Interpreting Studies(Ⅱ)

In the continuously expanded vision of foreign language research,translation is no longer a simple shift of linguistic signs between two languages.In recent years,increasing attention to translation research has been paid to the investigation of the assessment of interpreting translation tests.In 2009,Testing and Assessment in Translation and Interpreting Studies,a monograph written by Angelelli and Jacobson,was published by John Benjamins.With the focus on the assessment of interpreting and translating ability across languages and contexts,this book covers issues including interpreter and translator competence,assessment purpose,assessment framework,assessment methods,translation testing model,translator authorization system,legal and conference translation,translation training,and translation quality assessment.It lays the foundation for testing and assessing the quality of interpretation and translation,and also expands the research horizon in this field.The second chapter of this book,concerning the current situation of translation in the U.S.medical field and the assessment of translators’ performance,was selected as the translation practice and research object of this practical report.Under the guidance of Toury’s translation norm theory,“preliminary norms”,“initial norms” and “operational norms” were respectively used to categorize and analyze the translation methods used in this translation practice in a hierarchical manner.In particular,the analysis of translation examples aims at guide the practice of evaluating translations text in the academic field.This report is divided into five sections: The firstly section briefly introduces the source text,the background of this translation practice,and the dual significance of theory and practice.The second section describes the task and analyzes the source text at three levels: the lexical level,syntactic level,and textual level.The third section explains the translation process following three stages including pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation,and shows the whole translation practice process in detail,covering the selection of translation tools and resources,formulation of the translation plan,implementation of translation quality control,and self-evaluation,peer-evaluation,and evaluation by the client.In this section,the origin,development process,and current research status of Toury’s translation norm theory are explained,followed by the elaboration on“Preliminary Norms”,“Initial Norms” and “Operational Norms”.The fourth section describes the application of various translation methods in this translation practice under the guidance of Toury’s translation norm theory.Finally,the gains and losses of this practice report and the limitations of the study are summarized in the fifth section.Through this translation practice,the translator has a deeper understanding of interpretation testing and assessment and related theories,and is also aware of the importance of abundant knowledge reserves and the ability to obtain effective information in translation practice,providing a reference for related translation practice.
