English Picture Book Reading Teaching In Primary Schools

Abstract/Summary:
Reading is not only an important skill of language learning but also the vital item of language teaching.Nowadays,with the development of English learning,much more attention is given to the English reading teaching.However,because of the problems such as boring and monotonous teaching method and old content,reading teaching in primary school still has the space to conduct further study.Since English picture books have colorful pictures and they are well illustrated with simple and repeated language,they have become more and more popular with pupils.In this case,how to use English picture books to stimulate pupils’ reading interest and change their reading attitude so as to improve their reading achievement is a topic worthy of study.This study tries to use The Schema Theory,Multiple Intelligences Theory,Input Hypothesis Theory and Multimodal Theory as the theoretical basis to conduce the picture book reading teaching.Moreover,the author conducted the experiment by using the quantitative and qualitative methods to answer the following two research questions:(1)Can picture book reading teaching stimulate students’ reading interest and change their reading attitude in primary schools?(2)What effects does picture book reading teaching have on students’ reading achievement in primary school?The participants of the research were 110 students in grade four and they were randomly distributed to the experimental class and control class with 53 students in experimental class and 57 students in control class respectively.Before the experiment,the author took the final examination of the first semester of 2019-2020 academic year(see appendix1)as the pretest and analyzes the data.According to the analysis,the P value is 0.5375(P> 0.05),indicating that the English reading proficiency of the students in experimental and control class was identical.Besides,the author carried out the questionnaire to learn about students’ reading interest and attitude.As for the experiment process,The author conducted the teaching practice of text-based English picture books in experimental class for four months and the control class also took the same teaching material with the traditional teaching method in PEP English textbook,which is the main textbook in author’s English teaching.After the experiment,the author carried out questionnaires again so as to see the changes of students’ reading interest and attitude compared with that before the experiment.And moreover,the author conducted the reading examination(see appendix3)as the post-test.The analysis showed that the P value is 0.000(P<0.05),which indicates that after the picture book reading teaching,There are significant differences in English reading interest,reading attitude and achievement between the two classes.Thus the thesis drew the following conclusion:(1)Picture book can stimulate students’ English reading interest and change their reading attitude.(2)Picture book reading teaching can improve students’ reading achievement and has the further effect for reading achievement.At the end,the author analyzed the limitations existing in the research.And the author also came up with some suggestions for further research.
