Level 2 objectives of the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 Edition)clearly set out the requirements in reading: students can read simple stories or short texts with the help of pictures, and students can develop the habit of reading by meaning groups. However, most non-picture reading teaching is mainly based on grammar and vocabulary input, which students inevitably find it boring, while English picture books are more in line with the cognitive characteristics and psychological needs of primary school students due to the combination of pictures and text and the distinctive themes, thus it is especially significant to teach primary school students to read picture books in this context. The authors selected 88 students from two Grade Six classes in Dongsheng District Primary School No.7 as samples, ranging from September to the end of December 2021,and randomly divided the two classes into the experimental class and the control class, according to the needs of the experiment. The students in the experimental class were taught with picture-book reading mode, while the control class was taught with non-picture book reading mode. The experiment used interviews, questionnaires and tests to conduct an empirical study of the English picture book reading teaching classroom in primary schools, focusing on two questions.1.Can English picture books increase primary school students’ interest in reading English? 2.Can English picture books improve primary school students’ English reading comprehension skills? The initial data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and tests, and the data were statistically analyzed with SPSS 26.0.Through the investigation, the author concluded that using picture books for teaching English reading in primary school has improved students’ interest in English reading and English reading comprehension abilities. At the same time, the author also puts forward several suggestions on teaching English picture book reading:1.Teachers should discreetly select picture books that are suitable for primary school students to read, such as those that are moderately difficult, the students are interested in,closely related to the textbook and so on.2.Teachers should guide the students to read picture books so as to develop students’ abilities to read pictures, summarize and comprehend details.3.While using picture books to teach reading, the function of cultural awareness and language techniques enhancement in listening, speaking, and writing should be brought into play to develop students’ competence. Finally, the author clarifies the significance of this study, and explains the limitations of this study, and suggests further relevant research for future researchers.
