Visual Perception And Photographic Practice From The Perspective Of Semiotics

What is the significance of a sun-shot photograph taken by Nicephore Niepse on the second floor of his residence in 1826? Did it just mark the birth of photography,or did it herald a revolution in the way we recorded it,or did it encourage a variety of ways of seeing it? Whatever it means,we have to admit that it has the potential to be a visual art since its birth.Some people think that photography liberates painting: Susan Sontag believes that "photography liberates painting by taking over the task of depicting reality,which has been monopolized by painting until now,and allowing painting to take on its great modernist mission--abstraction".In today’s photo era,photography as a visual art has been fully integrated into our lives.Whether in the practical field or in the field of art,we all need to perceive the existence of the world and our own existence through photography.When we watch photographic works,we are experiencing the process of visual perception works,which can not avoid its impact on our psychology.Rudolf Arnheim believes that when it comes to art,we should not lose sight of our innate talent for perceiving things through various senses.Theoretical concepts should not exist independently of perceptual perception.Therefore,it is very necessary to study the expression form of art works from the perspective of visual perception.However,if photography is only studied from the field of visual perception,it is easy to fall into the exploration of pure picture form.As a contemporary art,photography itself is engraved in the mind of every viewer as a symbol of the content recorded through photography.Through the transmission of symbols,photography finally achieves a special delivery of a spirit,an idea,a feeling,an attitude and an idea.Visual perception and semiotics together constitute an important part of contemporary photography,while photography as a medium also links the two disciplines quietly.In this paper,visual perception and image symbols as well as their relationship will be elaborated to further analyze the development track of contemporary photography art,as well as the development direction of photography in the future.First,I will sort out the concepts of visual perception and visual semiotics and make a basic discussion.Then,I will make a specific discussion on the application of visual perception and image symbols in photography,and on this basis,I will discuss the relationship between visual perception and semiotics in photography.Finally,I will combine visual perception and semiotics to elaborate on my graduation work.
