Recent years, in the field of photograph, the term of conceptualphotograph has been continually mentioned. Also, the analysis related to theconceptual photography has increasingly risen both in various large-scalephoto exhibitions and on the professional photography websites. Withoutdoubt, conceptual photography has become the mainstream in the field ofcontemporary photography. For this kind of works, the main standard of valuesto measure a work is whether there is profound concept within it. Coupled withthe contemporaneity of conceptual photography and the vigorous developmentof art, some artists regard it as a means to create art. What’s more, there areincreasing number of young photographers who devote themselves into thecreation of conceptual photography. As a result, the works under the guidanceof conceptual photography have sprung up.With the occurrence of one phenomenon, there must be something whichis worthy to study and arrange. As a tool to express concept, conceptualphotography is the presentation of consciousness. While for the presentationof consciousness, the profound theoretical research is needed. However, mostyoung photographers are limited in the creation activities that based onpersonal feelings and simulation, lacking the study in the creation methods andtheories of photographing. Therefore, some problems are still alive at thecreation and understanding levels, so a theoretical method is badly in need forguiding them.In the study and research of semiotics, the paper writer found the theory ofsemiotics is adaptive to the study of conceptual photography, that is,conceptual photography owns some semiotics characteristics and semioticscan be used as a method to research conceptual photography. Therefore, thepaper writer decides to find a new idea to research conceptual photographystarting from the theory of semiotics. The basic framework of the paper are as follows: Chapter1, brief introduction of the background, current situation andobjectives of the paper in order to determine the research objectives andvalues. Chapter2, presentation of the theory of semiotics in order to find theadaptability of semiotics towards the study of conceptual photography. Chapter3, starting from the theory of semiotics and the individual features ofconceptual photography to find its semiotics characteristics. Chapter4,Starting from the concept of photography symbol characteristics, semioticinterpretation of the concept of photography, find the theory basic thought ofthe concept of photography using a symbolic interpretation, and guide theconcept photography creation; Chapter5, draw the conclusion that semiotics isadaptive to the study of conceptual photography, and conceptual photographyowns some semiotics characteristics. Moreover, semiotics can be regarded asa method to analyze conceptual photography.Of course, conceptual photography can be created and understood in many different ways.Also,semiotics is not proper for the studying of all the conceptual photography works.This paper mainly focus on providing a new angle ofview, a new method and a new thought pattern for conceptual photography studying,with the wish of finding the inspiration about conceptual photography studying within the semiotics.
