The English-Chinese Translation Of The Good Stranger(Chapter 2-6) And A Report On The Translation

This thesis consists of three parts: the source text,the target text and the translation report.The source text is selected from chapter 2-6 of Dete Meserve’s novel The Good Stranger.This novel tells an unexpected but very warm story: after a huge blackout crisis,New York City fell into darkness.In the tense atmosphere,people’s fear of robbery and destruction did not happen.Unexpectedly,thousands of mysterious gifts spread all over the city,all of which came from the kindness of strangers.As the title suggests,the book’s theme is “kindness”,which is intended to convey the truth,kindness and beauty in life,which is in line with core socialist values.Therefore,the book as a translation material has practical significance.Chapter two to Chapter six of the source text focuses on a series of surprising acts of kindness and the search for truth in New York City after the blackout crisis.The plot of this part is compact and fascinating,and the text involves many dialogues,emotional expressions and unique western cultural knowledge.Not only reading enjoyment,but also to examine the translator’s translation ability,so the translator chooses these five chapters as translation materials.Through this translation practice,the translator hopes to guide readers to discover and convey the truth,kindness and beauty in life,and promote positive energy.The material of this translation practice is the novel text,focusing on the depiction of characters,the description of the environment and the presentation of the story plot.The language of the text is concise and vivid,rich in emotion,with a combination of long and short sentences and various sentence patterns.In translation,the translator should not only accurately translate the content of the source text,but also reflect the style of the source text,so that the readers of the target text can have the similar reading experience as the readers of the source text.This is consistent with Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,such as “the closest natural equivalence”,“reader’s response” and so on.Therefore,the translator chooses Functional Equivalence Theory to guide this translation practice,and studies the equivalence between the source text and the target text from the lexical,syntactic and textual levels,in an effort to produce the charm of the source text.The translation report consists of six parts.The first part is task description,including the background,purposes,significance of the task and the structure of the translation report.The second part is process description,including pre-translation,while-translation and posttranslation.The third part mainly introduces Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,the research status at home and abroad and the application of the theory in practice.The fourth part is case analysis.That is,under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,the case is analyzed from lexical,syntactic and textual levels.The last part is conclusion,including reflections in the translation process and limitations of this thesis.
