Problems And Solutions Of Translating Complex Structure In Long English Sentences

Long sentences in English mainly refer to simple sentences and compound sentences with complex grammatical structures,modifiers and content levels.Long sentences frequently appear in academic English texts,and the structure of which is complex.Thus,the analysis of sentence structure is very important in understanding the content of the text.During English–Chinese translation,it is hard to analyze the complex structure of long English sentences,which causes translation difficulties.Thus,it is of significance to solve above difficulties.Under these backgrounds,the report chooses Between Psychology and Philosophy as the original text for translation,analyzing the translation difficulties of long English sentences with complex structures,and then puts forward corresponding translation solutions.Through the analysis,comparison and revision of three phases including pre-task preparation,translation and post-translation,the thesis summarizes three kinds of translation problems of long English sentences with complex structures.Firstly,the ellipsis and the substitution structure is implicit.Secondly,the structure of phrases in long sentence is complex,especially verb-object phrase and the non-predicate phrase.Thirdly,the logic structure is also complex,mainly reflected in the complex cause-and-effect structure and progressive structure.After translation and revision,on the basis of analyzing the above translation problems,this thesis puts forward the corresponding translation solutions.Specifically,to solve the problem of implicit ellipsis and substitution structure,the solutions of compensation and amplification can be used.In view of the complex structure of phrases,the solutions of paraphrase and conversion can be adopted.In terms of the complex logic structure,the solutions of logical explicitation,splitting and reorganizing can be adopted.The translation problems and translation solutions analyzed in this thesis come from the translation practice of academic monographs.Hopefully,it will provide some advice for the translation of long sentences with complex structure in similar texts.
