Problems And Solutions Of Translating Complex English Compound Sentences

English compound sentences are complex in sentence patterns and diverse in expressions,which pose great challenges for translating and understanding the source text.If the strategies are not flexibly used,it will lead to misunderstanding and fail to achieve the goal of conveying feelings.Therefore,it is imperative to study the translation of English compound sentences.Meanwhile,translators need to constantly improve their professional quality,fully consider the linguistic characteristics of English,adopt appropriate translation methods according to the sentence structure characteristics of different types of compound sentences,and accurately express the source language.This thesis excerpts an informative text The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Globalization,which is characterized by precise wording,clear logic and objective expression of content.It proposes the corresponding solutions to specific problems during the process of translation practice.Since there are a large number of compound sentences,the translator sums up three major types of translation problems after sorting out and analyzing the original text.First,the complex structure of adjective clauses,including the coordinate adjective clauses,and the embedded adjective clauses;Second,the complex structure of nominal clauses,including the continuous usage of object clauses and other clauses,and the continuous usage of appositive clauses and other clauses;At last,the adverbial clause is complex in sentence patterns and varies in functions,including the continuous usage of single adverbial clauses and other clauses,and multiple adverbial clauses.Based on the case analysis,the thesis summarizes the corresponding translation methods: liner translation,independent separation,segmentation,recombination,fusion and sequential transformation.Based on the corresponding translation methods mentioned above,it is hoped that they can provide some reference for the Chinese translation of compound sentences in informative texts.
