“Equivalence” serves as one of the core issues discussed in translation theory. On the basis of the previous studies,Werner Koller redefines the concept of equivalence from various aspects, and divides it into five types of equivalence relations, involving denotative equivalence, connotative equivalence,text-normative equivalence, pragmatic equivalence and formal equivalence. Each type of equivalence, applicable in different scopes,is realized in its specific translation methods, which can be used as an instruction for translation practice. The translation material is excerpted from the first two chapters of Churchill:Walking with Destiny, written by Andrew Roberts.Churchill: Walking with Destiny,a biographical work featured with historicity and literariness,is positioned as a hybrid type of informative and expressive text. Its concise and flexible wording, and abundant complex sentences make translation a hard job.Based on Koller’s equivalence theory, this thesis puts his specific principles into practice, and has a deep discussion on the equivalence relations from three different levels of lexis, sentence and rhetorical device.Denotative and connotative equivalence focuses on the level of lexis;pragmatic equivalence on the level of communication and formal equivalence on the level of aesthetics and style. In addition, the translator also employs some methods, namely, annotation, modulation, adaptation in order to achieve better equivalence between the source text and the target text.It is concluded that the equivalence theory of Werner Koller is helpful in translating the biographical literature.
