Being a great politician and elocutionist, Winston Churchill is considered as oneof the most important political leaders in the20th century. He has been listed amongthe top eight eloquent orators in the world over the last one hundred years byParade, an American magazine. Churchill is of the brilliance of humanity with greatwisdom and sense of humor. By reading the excellent words he said, we canappreciate the wit and humor of Winston Churchill and get a better understanding ofthe history of that time. On the basis of the translation of The Wicked Wit ofWinston Churchill compiled by Dominique Enright, the thesis aims at discussing andsummarizing the difficulties at lexical, syntactical and rhetorical levels throughvarious examples within the framework of functional equivalence of Eugene A. Nida.The thesis is a translation project report and consists of four parts. Part one is abrief introduction of translation project, including the background of the project,research objective and significance as well as the report structure. Part two is ananalysis about the origin content, including a brief introduction of Churchill and hisspeech style. Part three is a case study, including an introduction of functionalequivalence, the translation strategy of combination of domestication andforeignization under Nida’s functional equivalence, a discussion and summary aboutthe difficulties in translation process as well as the techniques used by the author atlexical, syntactical and rhetorical levels through various examples. Part foursummarizes the inspiration and lesson the author gained in translation process andelaborates the limits and unsolved problems.
