The source text(ST)of this thesis,Florence Nightingale: The Woman and Her Legend, falls into biographical literature, which possesses authenticity and literariness. The difficulty in translating this genre is how to retain expressive effects of literary language and stylistic features of an original work on the basis of accurate transmission of the original message,so that readers can have emotional resonance. It suggests that, when translating the ST,its authenticity in content and literariness in form should both be reproduced in the target text(TT)so as to achieve an integration of content and form.Under the guidance of Werner Koller’s equivalence theory, this thesis studies how to achieve the unity of authenticity and literariness in the translation practice.Werner Koller proposes that ‘equivalence’ is a relative concept. It is constrained on the one hand by a variety of potentially conflicting SL/TL linguistic-textual and extra-linguistic factors and circumstances and on the other by the historical-cultural conditions under which texts and their translations are produced and received. He puts forward five types of equivalence relations, namely, denotative equivalence, connotative equivalence,text-normative equivalence, pragmatic equivalence and formal equivalence.Realization of these relations in rendering can balance the denotative content and aesthetic form of the ST and achieve the unity of facts and literary aesthetics. In the translation of Florence Nightingale: The Woman and Her Legend, the thesis adopts some translation methods, such as literal translation, paraphrase and compensation,in attempt to achieve the above-mentioned relations at lexical, syntactic and stylistic levels,so the authenticity and literariness of biographical literature are reproduced in the TT.The practice proves that Koller’s equivalence theory has certain applicability for the translation of biographical literature.
