The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Adolescent Altruistic Behavior

Altruistic behavior is a noble behavior to promote the healthy development of human society,improve the level of human cooperation and jointly deal with various disasters.Therefore,the harmonious,stable and sustainable development of society cannot be achieved without the good altruistic behavior of teenagers.It is of great theoretical and practical significance to explore the influencing factors and mechanism of adolescent altruistic behavior.Existing studies have shown that adolescents’ parenting style,gratitude,and perceived school atmosphere all influence their altruistic behavior,but the mechanism is not clear.In this study,1050 high school students from a senior high school in Meizhou City,Guangdong Province were selected as subjects.Using questionnaire method,we investigated the mediating effect of gratitude on the relationship between parental rearing styles and adolescents’ altruistic behavior,as well as the moderating effect of perceived school atmosphere.The main results are as follows :(1)Adolescents’ altruistic behavior has significant gender differences,and the level of girls’ altruistic behavior is higher than that of boys.(2)Kin altruism was significantly positively correlated with gratitude,perceived school atmosphere and parental emotional warmth,and negatively correlated with parental rejection.Reciprocal altruism was significantly positively associated with gratitude,perceived school atmosphere,parental overprotection and parental warmth,and significantly negatively associated with paternal rejection.Pure altruistic behavior was significantly positively correlated with gratitude,perceived school atmosphere,parental warmth and paternal overprotection.(3)Parental rejection and parental overprotection can significantly negatively predict gratitude,and parental warmth can significantly positively predict gratitude.Gratitude can positively and significantly predict adolescent altruistic behavior.(4)Gratitude plays a partially mediating role in the influence of parental rearing styles on adolescent altruistic behavior.(5)The direct effect of maternal overprotection on adolescents’ altruistic behavior through gratitude was moderated by the perceived school atmosphere.The more overprotection their mothers were,the higher the level of adolescents’ altruistic behavior was.
