A Practice Report On Liaison Interpreting For The On-line Meeting Between An Israeli Pavement Survey Company And A Chinese Road Maintenance Company

Numerous foreign investments have attracted by the booming Chinese market,and consider the country has great developing potential.The online business meeting is mainly about the establishment of a joint venture.D-Vision,an Israeli company in road pavement and maintenance,was seeking for strategic partners in China to explore the Chinese market.Chinese side is a road maintenance company headquartered in West China.The author was employed by D-Vision to provide interpreting service for both Chinese speaker and the head of D-Vision.As a liaison interpreter of the online meeting,the author offered interpreting service for Chinese and Israeli companies,promoting a successful meeting.Featured with flexibility and efficiency,online interpreting makes an effect after the global spreading of Covid-19 pandemic.Online interpreting enables effective communication among the interpreter and the speakers without being limited by the time and the place.There is a flipside of the online interpreting,unstable internet connection,noise disturbances and signal latency,bringing great challenges to the interpreter and jeopardizing effective communication between two sides.The content of the online meeting is about the cooperation between Chinese and Israeli enterprises to explore the Chinese market in road pavement industry.This report analyzes the advance preparation,interpreting performance,customer feedback and the author’s self-evaluation.With examples,this paper also demonstrates the difficulties and deficiencies in the process of interpreting,and the strategies of paraphrasing,simplification and omission adopted by the author in order to improve the quality of interpretation.Last but not least,the author summarizes the gains and losses of the interpreting practice,hoping to share with interpreting practitioners some experience on remote interpreting study.
