A Project Report On Business Liaison Interpreting For SMEsOI, Co. Ltd.

In the new century with the deepening of globalization, countries have witnessed ever-increasing business and cultural exchanges and communications between one another, thus attaching great significance to business liaison interpreting, which serves as a bridge among countries. Given the multiple tasks, flexible and diversified interpreting themes and modes, various roles played by them such as cultural communicators and liaisons, business liaison interpreters should always stand the tests of language competence, professional qualities for translators and resilience capacity. From September 19th to September 26th, 2014, the reporter worked as the liaison interpreter for Professor Jeffrey Soar, chief research scientist in Small to Medium Enterprises Online International, Co. Ltd. during his stay in China. The reporter assisted his participation in the internal discussion on smart old-age care and in the seminar held in the management committee of Nanchang West High-tech Zone. The reporter also provided the tour guide interpreting services during his visit to the tourist attractions in Pingyao City, Shanxi Province. The reporter was fully aware of the fact that it was tough to cope with the challenges posed by the client, the variable environment, psychological pressure, and intercultural communication.In interpreting practice, with more clear-cut purposes, liaison interpreting requires the accurate and prompt delivery of the contents within limited time. Though approved and praised by the clients and employers for the interpreting services, the reporter was still faced with numerous difficulties and barriers, such as a various range of pre-preparation, knowledge of specialized fields, contingencies and cultural differences. Based on the relevant theories and experience, the reporter came up with the corresponding solutions in the thesis. On the basis of the analysis and exploration of the program, the reporter aims to effectively solve the concrete problems emerging in the business liaison interpreting program so as to find the weaknesses and to draw inspiration from the program for the days to come.
