With the development of English education and the promulgation of the core competence of English subject in high school in 2017,the overall goal of English language teaching has been adjusted,but cultural awareness still plays an important role in English teaching.Therefore,this thesis is based on cultural awareness in 2011 NECS,and draws on new requirements of cultural awareness in the core competence of English subject in senior high school in 2017,so as to explore the current situation and the cultivation strategies of cultural awareness in primary school English teaching.The researcher selected three teachers and 238 students from a primary school in Chengdu as subjects and conducted a three-month investigation.The interview,questionnaire and classroom observation were used as research tools to collect data.The specific research questions are as follows:(1)What is the current situation of cultural awareness cultivation in primary school English teaching?(2)What are the characteristics of cultural contents in English teaching?(3)What teaching models do teachers use to cultivate students' cultural awareness?The study found that,firstly,teachers can actively enrich the knowledge of cultural awareness cultivation and sum up the advantages of cultural awareness in language teaching and the difficulties of implementation,but teachers are likely to confuse the meaning of culture and cultural awareness,and the self-improvement approaches lack systematicness.Students have been cultivated in cultural understanding,cultural sensitivity and cultural identity,but cultural identity is relatively lacking.Secondly,the cultural contents have the following characteristics:(1)Different textbooks provide different cultural materials and different focus on culture types.(2)The contents of culture as knowledge are rich but more inclined to traditional customs and local characteristics.(3)The proportion of culture in foreign languages is greater than that in Chinese culture.(4)The proportion of different types of culture as behavior is similar.Thirdly,through classroom observations,the researcher has concluded two types of cultural teaching models.The additive model of teaching language and culture: culture presentation culture comparison culture explanation;the integrative model of teaching language and culture: culture presentation culture discussion culture explanation culture experience.The former is used for the contents of culture as knowledge,and the latter is used for the contents of culture as behavior.According to the research results,the researcher put forward two suggestions for the cultivation of cultural awareness.For schools,first,schools can organize teachers to collect and organize cultural teaching materials and provide thematic cultural courses.Second,the school can organize extracurricular cultural activities,such as the French Cultural Festival.For teachers,firstly,teachers should systematically understand culture and cultural awareness.Secondly,deeply explore and integrate cultural materials in different teaching materials.Thirdly,teachers should use the two experience and practice methods flexibly and explore the cultural teaching style that suits yourselves.
