This report is an English-Chinese translation of Malcolm Bradbury‘s novel Stepping Westward.Taking the campus of a university as the background, this fiction reveals the degeneration of values and the lack of a moral belief system in Western society. The excerpt(Part III)is about James Walker‘s experience upon his arrival in the United States. This translation report is divided into four parts, including the translation task, translation process description, translation case analysis, and conclusion. The third part is the key content of this report.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the translator has attempted to explore academic fiction‘s translation strategies. There are three aspects of the case analysis: the translator uses part of speech and four-character structure in the translation of words under the guidance of the skopos rule;the translator uses splitting and amplification translation strategies to deal with long sentence translation under the guidance of the coherence rule;for the environmental description of this fiction, the translator uses syntactic linearity and recasting methods under the guidance of the fidelity rule. The translator elaborates on the translation difficulties and summarizes the experience as well as limitations of this translation project. The translator hopes to provide references for the future translation of similar types.
