A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Hating Game (Excerpts): Translation Of Metaphors In Literary Text

This report is based on the E-C translation of The Hating Game,which was written by Sally Thorne and published in August,2016.The main content of this book is to describe the love story between the heroine and the hero.This book is a literary text with romantic comedy style.As a novel,there are many dialogues,metaphors and ellipsis in the text.Among these difficulties,the translation of metaphor is particularly difficult.However,if the metaphors are not handled properly,readers may not be able to understand the plot of the novel.Based on the quantitative statistics of the proportion of metaphors,the metaphors are regarded as the research object of this report.Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory is applied as the guidance.This report will study how to translate metaphors into more comprehensible contents for Chinese readers without affecting the original humorous content.In this paper,metaphors are divided into three categories: the definite metaphor,the semi-implicit metaphor,the implicit metaphor.Different translation methods are adopted for different kinds of metaphors,such as conversion,voice conversion,restructuring,amplification and semantic variation.This report is aimed to make a further exploration of the translation methods of metaphors in the literary text.
