This report on English-Chinese translation is based on The Teacher written by Peter Farraday,a foreign teacher from Shenyang Normal University(SYNU).His autobiography comes as a story about his experiences in China. It offers the reader an in-depth introduction to the author's pursuit of his dream and the changes in his attitude towards his career as a teacher.Large numbers of prepositions with various usages appear in the source text. They sometimes pose an obstacle to the translator who finds much has to be done for accurate comprehension and appropriate expression.Among the prepositions,IN stands out as one of the most frequently used. That's why a deep analysis has been conducted of the characteristics and functions of IN.And four translation methods, amplification, omission, conversion and reconstruction, have been adopted to make its translations smooth, natural and readable.Guided by “Communicative Translation Theory” by Peter Newmark, and based on a deep analysis of the preposition IN,the report intends to make a further exploration of the translation methods that may be applied in rendering preposition IN in a literary text.In the report some common rules guiding its translations are discussed in the hope that referential values might be offered for further discussions.
