For interpreters, the more prepared you are,the better the interpretation you produce.A large number of present studies on pre-interpreting preparation remain focused on professional interpreters and the impact of pre-interpreting preparation on interpreting quality. The surveys and empirical studies on pre-interpreting preparation of MTI students remain insufficient. To this end, this study conducts a pre-interpreting preparation survey of 51 MTI students at China Foreign Affairs University through questionnaire and interview to describe the status quo of MTI students’ preinterpreting preparation, identify and analyze their problems, and propose targeted recommendations for improvement. Results of the survey indicate that, firstly, glossaries, instead of specific contents, are usually the focus of MTI students;Secondly, the preparation method adopted by most MTI students tend to be traditional;Thirdly, most MTI students prepare randomly and thereby are easily distracted by irrelevant information; And fourthly,MTI students find it hard to locate the exact terms they need in interpretation practices.Their preparation is not satisfying because they usually prepare a lot but only a limited portion is useful. In light of the above deficiencies, this report provides the following suggestions:(1)MTI students should make full preparations and use modern technologies to better support pre-interpreting preparation;(2)Since preparation is a self-organized learning process,it is necessary to prepare with a clear purpose, which will help them stay focused;(3)Classifying materials into different categories will help MTI students make good use of their prepared materials;(4)By updating and improving the prepared materials after an interpretation practice,MTI students can extend the life-span of the preparation materials.
