The Importance Of Pre-interpreting Preparation In Consecutive Interpreting

With the rapid development of Chinese economy and continuous growth of China’s international standing, exchanges between China and other countries have increased gradually, which pose an increasing demand for interpreting talents. Therefore, nowadays interpreting research is in a flourishing period, and has attracted more and more researchers. However, among the existing researches, more attention have been paid to the development of interpreting skills and evaluation of interpreting quality, and little attention to pre-interpreting preparation. However, as a highly difficult cross-cultural activity, the success of interpreting depends on pre-interpreting preparation to a large extent.During the interpreting practice for participants of APEC seminar on rural development and poverty alleviation, as one of the interpreters for the seminar, the author not only learned a large amount of new knowledge, but also fully recognized her shortcomings in the process of interpreting, and gained a better understanding of the profession of interpreting. As the saying goes,"practice makes perfect", after the practice, the author made a self-reflection, and realized that she needed to improve encyclopedia knowledge, listening skills and accumulation of terminologies, which can be included in long-term and short-term pre-interpreting preparation. The practice also made the author deeply aware of the importance of pre-interpreting preparation in consecutive interpreting.Therefore, the author mainly chooses two representative parts of the above-mentioned interpreting practice to do case analysis, and analyses the relevance between pre-interpreting preparation and four major problems during the practice, including omission and misinterpretation of information, improper handling of long sentences, misinterpretation of numbers and inconformity to Chinese expressions, so as to prove the importance of pre-interpreting preparation in consecutive interpreting. Through this practice report, the concept of pre-interpreting preparation and its influence on consecutive interpreting can be known to readers from a more objective and comprehensive view, which could enhance their understanding of the importance of pre-interpreting preparation.
