A Report On C-E Translation Of Luyi Folklore

Folklore is an important part of a country’s culture.The translation of folk texts is conducive to spreading Chinese culture.Based on the translation of Chapters 5 and 6 of Luyi Folklore,this thesis discusses the translation strategies and methods of folklore texts from three aspects of language,culture and pragmatics.The purpose of this report is to introduce Chinese local folk customs to English speaking audience and contribute to the spread of Chinese culture.Through the comparative analysis of the original text,the first translation and the final translation,the author finds that: on the language level,the author first analyzes and deconstructs the four-character idioms and run-on sentences in the original text,and then reorganizes them into English translation.On the cultural level,on the one hand,a large number of folk culture words occur in the text,which cause lexical gaps.On the other hand,some customs in the text cannot be found in English-speaking countries and some even seem strange to us.Therefore,the author first has a better understanding for the relevant folk knowledge,and then gives full play to his subjective initiative and creativity,so that the translation is more easily acceptable to foreign readers.On the pragmatic level,when dealing with these appellations,dialects and alternative names,the author adopts the methods of transliteration,annotation,omission and interpretation to retain the characteristics of the original language,and make appropriate adjustments to pass on the folk culture.The author hopes to provide reference for the future research in the field of folklore translation by summarizing the translation strategies and methods in the practice of folklore translation.
