Abstract/Summary:
The quality of China’s teaching contingent in elementary education is largely determined by the teachers’ professional development level.However,in the process of the teachers’ professional development,there generally exists a ‘plateau phenomenon’,i.e,a stagnation or setback in the professional development level,thus directly influencing the improvement of the teachers’ teaching ability and restraining the school educational and teaching quality from being further enhanced.This thesis aims at the primary school English teacher group by starting from their professional development standard about the plateau phenomenon in the teachers’ professional development.By applying the case study,documentary studies,questionnaire investigation,semi-construction interviews and combining the work at selected spots with that of the whole area,the thesis makes a diagnosis of the primary school English teachers’ plateau phenomenon in their professional development.Upon this,it makes a complete analysis of the present situation of the primary school English teachers’ professional development from the four aspects,i.e,the society,families,schools and teachers,trying to seek the causes why the plateau phenomenon has formed.Based on the investigation of S Primary School,the research shows that the plateau phenomenon of English teachers’ professional development in primary school is more prominent,which has a strong correlation with age,teaching age,professional title,marriage and childbearing status,and the characteristics of the subject in the learning period.The current situation is reflected in the stagnation or decline of the level of teaching ability.The key issues leading to S Primary School English teachers’ plateau phenomenon in their professional development are as follows: Most teachers at the plateau stage look forward to going out of the plateau,but lack adequate subjective efforts and fail to dissolve the objective influential factors,whereas the school and government lack systematic and target designs in the concerning support.Solving the plateau phenomenon of primary school English teachers’ professional development is a systematic project,which needs to be carried out from the aspects of society,education management departments,schools and teachers.The society and management departments of education should create respect for teachers and attach importance to education,optimize policies,let teachers return to education and teaching itself,let teachers obtain greater professional development rights and space fairly and just,and eliminate the factors forming teachers’ professional plateau;Schools should create a good environment for teachers to break through the plateau of professional development in terms of workload standards,teacher evaluation mechanism and learning development environment;Teachers themselves must be active and active,and they should stimulate the motive force of development,expand the influence of teachers,enhance teaching ability,hone teaching research ability,and enhance teaching innovation ability to solve the dilemma of professional development plateau.
