| The thesis is based on the translation practice of the memoirs of the anthology Botswana Women Write. The Chinese translation of the collection of Botswana works in English is one of the sub-projects of the Major Project of National Social Sciences Foundation of China “History of African Literature in English”.Memoirs are biographical and narrative. The five memoirs selected by the editors are representative and provide honest and objective accounts of Botswana women’s life in a traditionally patriarchal society, giving the readers a glimpse of the awakening consciousness of women in Botswana. It is hoped that this translation practice will contribute to a better understanding of Botswana culture and African women’s culture. The translator has tried to render the memoirs in accordance with the writing styles and artistic features of the texts and to be faithful to the original texts.Based on the specificity of memoirs’ diction and style, this thesis takes translation of Botswana cultural, religious, social, historical and political terminologies as the starting point, and then summarizes the translation methods and strategies of the memoirs, focusing on representative cases in the translation process. The main difficulty during the practice is the translation of the words with cultural characteristics of the source language. To solve the difficult problems, the translator has read parallel texts of relevant Botswana books and papers so as to get familiar with the linguistic features and translation methods of biographical texts, with a view to providing some references for memoir translation, and promoting public understanding of Botswana. |
