Ocean is an important source of the earth’s biodiversity. It is our duty to protect the marine ecological environment. However,in recent years, with the rapid development of economy,a series of human activities and exploration on marine resources are also increasing, leading to the increasingly serious pollution of marine ecological environment. In order to realize a community of maritime destiny, countries all over the world need to have a detailed and comprehensive understanding of marine pollution. Therefore,it is of practical significance and research value to translate oil spills and other related marine pollution texts. This report selects the first chapter of Coastal and Deep Ocean Pollution as the source text, which mainly discusses the oil spill and ocean pollution. The selected text has distinct academic style, rich professional terms, strict logic and complex sentences structures, which is a typical scientific and technological information text.Guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translation aims to accurately convey the original information and meet the target readers’ expectations. The translation report analyzes the following problems including the inaccuracy in translating technical terms, the translationese caused by overemphasis on formal equivalence and lack of cohesion and coherence in the target text. The corresponding solutions are to standardize the technical expressions,post-edit the TT to avoid the translationese, and adjust the semantic logic at the discourse level.Through the detailed analysis of the translation, the translator is fully aware that in the process of translation practice, the ability of information retrieval and discrimination is vital, and the translator’s bilingual ability needs to be further improved. It is expected that this translation practice report can provide corresponding reference for other translation activities.
