This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the six chapters of the novel,The Sentence Is Death, written by Anthony Horowitz. The source text came from the translation project of the translator’s supervisor.Up to now, there has been no Chinese translation for the source text.In order to achieve the maximum consistency between the translated text and the source text, the translator takes Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical guidance.Functional Equivalence Theory insists that translation should realize the functional equivalence between two languages instead of rigid correspondence,so that the reading effect of the target readers is similar to that of the original readers, which the translator attempts to achieve in the translation. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter one mainly introduces the background information, entruster’s requirements and the linguistic features of the source text.Chapter two describes the translation process and the proofreading and revision stage, like adequate preparation works, the formulation of the glossary and the selection of translation theory.Chapter three introduces the Functional Equivalence Theory and its application in this translation practice.Chapter four mainly analyzes the strategies applied in the translation. As a detective novel, there are lots of descriptions about characters, scenes and dialogues in the source text, which need flexible translating methods. When translating the descriptions of characters, the translator used four-character phrases, literal translation and conversion of part of speech to show the vivid and well-round characters.Strategies like division, reorganization and conversion of voices were used to translate the long sentences in scene descriptions. As for the dialogues, the translator tried her best to correctly convey the logic and the mood of the original text.In the last chapter, the translator summarizes her gains and limitations in the translation practice, which gives her an opportunity to examine herself and improve her translation ability.
