On Translation Of Financial Texts Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the rapid development of China’s economy,translation of financial texts plays an increasingly important role in promoting economic exchanges especially in a world of economic globalization.The source text,selected from the book of Tim Hayward,centers on the important role that finance serves in the society and the criticism of financialization.The accurate transfer of meaning weighs heavily in the translation of financial texts,which matches well with the functional equivalence theory that attaches importance to providing a similar response rather than the equivalent form.Therefore,the thesis mainly discusses the translation methods of financial texts under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.A thorough analysis of the source text reveals that its distinctive features fall into three categories.Thus corresponding translation methods are introduced accordingly under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.In light of financial terms and abstract nouns at the lexical level,the literal translation of financial terms,conversion of part of speech,addition and omission are adopted to be consistent with the expression habits of the target readers.Aimed at the frequent use of compound sentences,complex sentences and passive voice sentences,the translator mainly adopts linear translation,inversion,division,reconstruction and shifts of voice to achieve a natural and fluent translation version required by functional equivalence.Moreover,transfer of cohesive devices and manifestation of logical relations are employed to maintain the coherence and reproduce a rigorous and logical translated text.The thesis could be divided into six parts.The first part briefly introduces the research background,objectives and significance.The second part,chapter two,mainly focuses on previous studies on the functional equivalence theory while chapter three serves as the theoretical foundation of the thesis.After linguistic features of the source text are offered in chapter four,the key part of the thesis,chapter five,mainly centers on a detailed analysis of the selected translation examples under the guidance of functional equivalence theory while the last part involves major findings of the thesis and limitations as well.
