A Report On Translation Practice Of Chemical Patent Documents

This report is an English-Chinese translation report based on the translation project of three pharmaceutical intermediate patent documents of Xinxiang Tuoxin Pharmaceutical Co.,Ltd.The report focuses on three chemical patent documents of pharmaceutical intermediates which describe the preparation process and experimental process of three pharmaceutical intermediates.Pharmaceutical intermediates are chemical raw materials or chemical products used for synthetic drugs.The project reduces problems caused by language differences and makes it easier for researchers to learn from foreign technology,thus accelerating the pace of independent research and development process,which is of great significance to the company.The author analyzes the linguistic and content features of the source text,and under the guidance of the skopos theory of the functional school,discusses the specific application of the three rules of skopos theory,namely,the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.It adopts the translation methods and skills of abridged translation,zero translation,grammatical cohesion,thematic coherence,word order adjustment and lexical reproduction.The translation is finally recognized and praised by the client of the project.The author finds that the skopos theory and its three rules are applicable to guide the translation of chemical patent documents.At the same time,in order to achieve the goal of the client,special elements in the text,such as charts and chemical formulas,should be properly handled according to their requirements when translating.And the translation should be faithful to the source text and to the reader as much as possible through the above translation methods and skills.As the general translation of patent documents focuses on the application of patent,this project focuses more on the content of the patent itself.Therefore,the author hopes that this report can provide references for similar translation activities in the future.
