This report is based on The Pedant In The Kitchen(excerpt)by British author Julian Barnes,a collection of cookbook essays published in 2003.In the source text, thanks to the pedantry and stubbornness, the pedant cannot invent his own recipes and only follow those recipes created by others. He aims at cooking tasty and nutritious cuisines for his family and friends. This report seeks to analyze translation problems, such as the western culture and culinary-related conceptions, contextual diction and the reproduction of the pedant’s images. The utilization of various translation theories is hoped to effectively address the above-mentioned problems,so as to provide reference for the translation of such texts in the future. This report is composed of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the task description, which introduces selection of the source text, the author and the source text. The second chapter explores the textual analysis of the source text, consisting of type analysis and features of the source text. The third chapter is concerned with the translation theories and methods utilized in the translation problems: firstly, translation of western culture and culinary-related conceptions.Under the guidance of translation compensation theory, the translator applied two methods--annotation and addition--to solve this type of translation problems;secondly, translation of contextual diction. This type diction should be interpreted and translated in certain context with the methods of specification or addition;thirdly, the reproduction of the pedant’s images. With the application of the stylistic approaches to translation, the translator has vividly reproduced the pedantry and confidence of the pedant. The last chapter presents the summary containing the experience and limitations extracted from the translating practice. This report has found that,in literary translation, the translator should first ensure the accurate expression of the meaning of the source text and retain the language form of the source text as much as possible.Secondly, the translator should have a grasp of the style of the source text,so as to convey the literariness in the translated version.Ultimately, the translator should constantly improve the aesthetic appreciation of literature in the process of translation. For the reproduction of the pedant’s images, the translator should focus on the interpretation of his language and mind and strive for translating lively and naturally.
