A Report On Translating Chinese Investment In Europe: A Country-Level Approach(Excerpts)

This translation report is based on the excerpt from Chinese Investment in Europe: A Country-Level Approach,the 2017 annual report released by a European think tank summarizing the footprints of Chinese investment in EU member states by now.Beginning with the introduction of the general investing map,the relevant database,and date collecting methods,the source text then analyzes the specific investment of China in 19 European countries respectively with independent chapters.It’s especially helpful in terms of providing a good knowledge of China’s capital flows to Europe,and the stance of EU and its member states as well as the public opinion on it.With the first four chapters(also the most difficult part for translation)from the Think Tank Report as the source text,the translation report is composed of four parts.First,an introduction to the source text,including the background and significance of the project.Secondly,a description on four linguistic features of the source text,namely proper nouns and economic terms,titles,long sentences with complex modification,and ideological differences.Thirdly,the case study on the above four features combined with proposed corresponding translation strategies.This report concludes that zero translation and free translation can be applied for translating terms and proper nouns,if no established translation available.And bearing the context in mind,titles should be free-translated with a focus on both form and meaning.Then splitting,conversion,and even punctuation play an important role in rendering long sentences with complex modification,while the common strategies for dealing with ideological differences are rewriting,omission and diction.Finally,it is a summary of the gained experience and limitations of the translation practice.
